Canon U.S.A. Breaks Ground On New Americas Headquarters

(MELVILLE, N.Y.) - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a worldwide leader in digital imaging and advanced office solutions, today broke ground on its new North and South American headquarters campus in Melville, N.Y. The new facility will be a model for environmental stewardship and innovation and will serve as one of Canon Inc.'s three worldwide headquarters, with the others located in Tokyo and London.

"Over the past 40 years, Canon U.S.A. has developed strong roots in the Long Island community and we are thrilled to continue to make Long Island our home," said Joe Adachi, president and CEO, Canon U.S.A. "Canon is very grateful for the support we have received from every level of government and the local community to bring this new, state-of-the-art facility from concept to reality. We are committed to continuing our role as an active member of the Long Island business and local community and look forward to moving into our new home in Melville."

The new headquarters will also feature several environmentally friendly elements including a design emphasizing the use of natural lighting, the incorporation of energy-efficient equipment and materials in construction, as well as a landscape design that will utilize native species and drought-resistant vegetation.

"Environmental sustainability is a pillar of Canon's corporate culture," said Seymour Liebman, executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel, Canon U.S.A. "We view the development of our new headquarters as an opportunity to set a precedent for environmentally conscious development throughout the design and construction process. We are pleased to announce that the new facility is being designed to meet LEED Gold Certification Standards."

"Since the beginning of my administration, I have worked with communities to craft policies that create jobs and boost local economies," New York Governor David Paterson said. "Canon U.S.A. has more than 1,200 Long Island employees and is a major investor in the area economy. In agreeing to remain on Long Island, Canon U.S.A. will construct a new, state-of-the-art headquarters, which will not only provide long-term economic security for thousands of New Yorkers, but will also provide a great economic boost to Long Island and New York State."

"The groundbreaking of Canon U.S.A.'s Americas headquarters in Melville is truly a win-win for Long Island. This landmark project will be an anchor for the Route 110 corridor and will provide a boost to the local economy by creating thousands of jobs," said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. "During these tough economic times, that is outstanding news. I'm proud to have worked so hard on behalf of all Long Islanders to see this project come into fruition."

"I am proud to support Canon as it breaks ground on a new Canon Americas headquarters in Melville. This development will bring Long Island what we need most right now: jobs. Canon's new headquarters is a welcome addition to our business community and an important boost for our local economy," said Rep. Steve Israel (D – Huntington).

"Our aggressive economic development agenda focuses on attracting and retaining businesses ranging from start-up firms to some of the world's leading technology companies," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. "Having the Canon Americas headquarters of this international giant located here in the Route 110 corridor will provide a major economic boost to our area."

The Huntington Town Planning Board recently approved plans for the five-story office building, totaling close to 700,000 square feet, including two multi-level parking garages. The 52.17-acre parcel is located at the southwest corner of the Long Island Expressway South Service Road and Walt Whitman Road.

"Canon breaking ground on its new Canon Americas headquarters represents a major milestone in the redevelopment of the Route 110 corridor, bringing a total of 2,000 immediate and future jobs and spurring additional, related growth. We look forward to working with Canon as the construction progresses, to the eventual ribbon-cutting, when we will formally welcome the Canon employees who will call Huntington their working home," said Huntington Town Supervisor Frank P. Petrone.

Canon U.S.A. began in 1955 with five employees as the New York branch of an up-and-coming camera company. Today, the Company is a global imaging brand leader that every American looks to for consumer and business innovations and technologies. Canon U.S.A. Expands imageRUNNER ADVANCE Line With The Introduction Of Two New Monochrome Series

(PHILADELPHIA, PA) - Continuing to build upon the exceptional, full-service imageRUNNER ADVANCE document platform unveiled last year, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in advanced digital document imaging, today introduced the monochrome imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 Series and 6000 Series of powerful multifunction systems. Offering a seamless blend of hardware, software and services initially deployed in the award-winning imageRUNNER ADVANCE Color models, the new black-and-white models deliver improved image quality, exceptional output speeds, enhanced workplace efficiency and the bottom-line results critical for success in today's competitive business environment.

"The new Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE Series are advanced document management systems that increase workplace efficiency for organizations seeking to contain costs and increase profitability," said Sam Yoshida, vice president and general manager, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A. "Featuring innovative hardware and carefully engineered software applications that target light production and high-volume office environments, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE lineup allows businesses to increase office productivity while managing costs across a broad range of document-related activities."

imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 Series
The imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8105/8095/8085 models deliver exceptional output quality and speed, flexible paper handling options and robust finishing solutions with Canon's renowned reliability. Leveraging the capabilities of the Advanced imageCHIP system architecture, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 Series models offer the power and functionality necessary to meet the evolving demands of light production environments including central reproduction departments, in-plant facilities and print service providers requiring monochrome letter-sized output speeds of up to 105 pages per minute (ppm)/ 95 ppm/ 85ppm (Letter) for the 8105/8095/8085, respectively.

Further increasing the value of the new models are exceptionally fast scan speeds in both black-and-white and color. A standard, single-pass duplex scanning unit enables these devices to capture both sides of a two-sided original in a single pass, while delivering scan speeds of up to 200 images-per-minute (ipm) black-and-white and 100 ipm in color at 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) (Letter).

The imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8105/8095/8085 models feature a maximum paper capacity of up to 7,700 sheets and are equipped to handle up to 80 lb. cover media and paper sizes up to 13 x 19.25-inches. Coupled with its flexible media capabilities, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 Series delivers improved productivity by performing finishing functions previously reserved for dedicated production units. High-volume capabilities including multiple folding options, professional punching, post-process document insertion and face-trimming booklets can be retained in-house without the need for a separate device, delivering significant cost efficiencies.

In addition to light production environments, a revolutionary 120-volt power requirement and space-saving footprint offer greater device placement flexibility and help make the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 Series an ideal choice for high-volume offices seeking greater speed and productivity.

imageRUNNER ADVANCE 6000 Series
With output speeds of up to 75ppm, 65ppm, and 55ppm (Letter), respectively, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 6075/6065/6055 models allow high-volume corporate environments to harness the capabilities of an advanced MFP solution to address their particular document workflow requirements. The elegant, compact imageRUNNER ADVANCE 6075/6065/6055 models deliver powerful performance including rapid print, copy and color scan functionality as well as the ability to effectively manage documents and produce finished output, boosting productivity and reducing costs. As with the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 Series, the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 6000 Series models include a powerful high-speed single pass duplex scanning unit.

The imageRUNNER ADVANCE 6075/6065/6055 models also feature a maximum paper capacity of up to 7,700 sheets and can support up to 80 lb. Cover media, while handling paper sizes up to 11 x 17-inch. High-volume office environments utilizing the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 6000 Series can enjoy flexible in-line finishing capabilities such as multi-position stapling, booklet-making, post-process document insertion and C/Z- folding capabilities.

Advanced Technology
Similar to the imageRUNNER ADVANCE Color models, the new imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8000 and 6000 Series monochrome models employ a host of new technologies designed to improve the end-user experience while also streamlining workplace efficiency. In addition to the space-saving imageRUNNER ADVANCE design profile, the new models incorporate a Full Color SVGA TFT Control Panel, with a customizable user interface, Main Menu keys for easy access to popular functions and a Quick Menu key to help simplify workflow and share frequently used jobs or functions within a workgroup using one-touch buttons. Also included on all models is remote notification of low-supply inventory and "on-the-fly" paper or toner replacement, ensuring that high-volume jobs can run without interruption.

The new imageRUNNER ADVANCE models utilize "pO" toner in conjunction with the twin-sleeve technology employed in Canon's black-and-white imagePRESS line to faithfully reproduce detailed images and text, display ultra-smooth gradations and ensure toner is evenly distributed across the page throughout the entire print run. For detail-oriented projects, the new models also provide true 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution and Auto Gradation Adjustment for smooth, accurate, consistent output.

With a new design and improved technologies featured throughout the imageRUNNER ADVANCE lineup, the inclusion of the imageRUNNER ADVANCE Essentials package gives device managers an additional level of functionality and customization. Utilizing the components of imageRUNNER ADVANCE Essentials, device or fleet administrators are able to streamline their document workflow and maintain higher levels of monitoring and device control, which are critical aspects of light production and high-volume office environments seeking to improve efficiency and reduce overall document management costs. Additionally, all new models support Canon's MEAP technology, allowing for greater integration with customer's business processes and with leading third-party software applications.

Advanced Responsibility
Guided by our corporate philosophy of kyosei, Canon has a long-standing commitment to the environment, green technology and reducing carbon footprints through every phase of the product lifecycle. Through its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) System, Canon has lowered CO2 emissions by focusing on each stage of the product lifecycle, including manufacturing, energy-use and logistics. All imageRUNNER ADVANCE models employ certain components fabricated with 100 percent recycled plastics from retired products as well as bio-based plastics - a plant-derived compound that replaces certain petroleum-based plastic parts. In addition, the new imageRUNNER ADVANCE models have a low-energy consumption of 1 watt or less in Sleep Mode and exceed the European Union RoHS Directive standards.

Canon U.S.A. Unveils imageRUNNER 2500 Series Multifunction Products For Businesses Of All Sizes

(Lake Success, NY) - In response to the growing needs of large and small office environments requiring compact, highly capable and easy-to-use monochrome document imaging systems, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in advanced digital imaging and office solutions, today introduced the imageRUNNER 2545, 2545i, 2535, 2535i, 2530 and 2525 lineup of multifunction products (MFP). The new imageRUNNER models target users seeking a durable and robust, yet simple solution to common office needs, increased small office productivity, or a streamlined device to complete their office fleet with an easily-managed MFP, available at an affordable price.

"Recognizing the printing and multifunction needs of today's businesses, Canon is pleased to announce the addition of the imageRUNNER 2500 Series to our renowned lineup of imageRUNNER systems," said Sam Yoshida, vice president and general manager, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A. "The imageRUNNER 2500 Series offers all businesses a streamlined, cost-effective solution, combining excellent durability and simplicity of operation. These new products also meet the needs of corporate fleets, providing IT and business administrators with ease-of-management, regardless of equipment location, while delivering a targeted set of productivity features to end-users."

Streamlined Productivity
With performance and speed a necessity in any work environment, the Canon imageRUNNER 2500 Series offers businesses a practical blend of simplicity and function, without sacrificing high-quality performance. Built on the imageCHIP (Concurrent Hyper Intelligent Platform) LITE system architecture, which enables high productivity and print speeds by efficiently processing multiple functions simultaneously, the imageRUNNER 2545, 2545i, 2535, 2535i, 2530 and 2525 models offer black-and-white letter-sized output speeds of up to 45 pages-per-minute (ppm), 35ppm, 30ppm and 25 ppm, respectively and feature fast first copy times.

The imageRUNNER 2500 Series further enhances worker productivity with fast scanning available in both black-and-white and color. The imageRUNNER 2545/2545i/2535/2535i and imageRUNNER 2530/2525 models boast letter-sized scanning at speeds up to 45/34 images-per-minute (ipm) (black-and-white/Color, 300 dpi) and 35/25ipm (black-and-white/color, 300 dpi) respectively, using Canon's simple Color Send technology for fast document distribution. With the ability to scan documents into a range of file formats via email and fax, as well as to FTP and SMB file servers, the imageRUNNER 2500 Series easily works with end-user's document distribution and capture workflows.

Improved Durability
The Canon imageRUNNER 2500 Series models achieve increased durability and operational up-time compared to previous models, via a newly designed main engine unit. Improved up-time is achieved through a clean-sheet design that emphasizes parts durability, a reduction of replaceable components and ease-of-service by technicians. These technological improvements result in higher productivity and consistency for end-users. Included in the longer-life parts and further increasing device up-time is a compact E-Drum imaging unit and higher yield Quick Fixing (QF) toner.

Canon's E-Drum technology, first adopted in the imagePRESS model for professional color printing, employs an additional coat layer on the drum surface to deliver significant improvements in durability, while maintaining the exceptional image quality end-users have come to expect from Canon. Canon's advanced technologies also enable the imageRUNNER 2500 Series models to fuse toner to paper with less heat, resulting in lower energy usage without sacrificing image quality, a key requirement for many consumers. Canon's RAPID Fusing technology also allows for low energy usage in sleep mode – 1W or less – while delivering fast warm-up times of one second or less.

Enhanced Functionality
Standard on all Canon imageRUNNER 2500 Series models is an intuitive, vibrant and easy-to-use 5.7-inch LCD panel designed to improve operability and usability. In addition, all imageRUNNER 2500 models feature dual 550-sheet capacity cassettes and a 100-sheet bypass tray each handling up to 11" X 17" media, UFR II LT printing, 512MB RAM, 10/100 Base TX Ethernet connectivity, a single USB-Host port and color-scanning capabilities. An optional dual 550-sheet cassette can be added for a maximum paper capacity of 2,300 sheets, which coupled with a standard automatic paper-size detection feed, provides end-users the peace-of-mind to send complex print jobs to the device without extensive supply monitoring. Large toner capacities and on-the-fly replenishment capabilities further improve both worker productivity and system uptime.

For workgroups that need the productivity gains delivered by more advanced features, the imageRUNNER 2545 and 2535 systems are also available in "i" model configurations. In addition to the base features, the "i" models also include PCL and PostScript (emulated) printing, Color Send, including PDF High Compression technology for responsible network management, and Searchable PDF capability to better leverage scanned information with PC and back-end applications. All models can be equipped with an optional internal finisher to deliver convenient productivity of multi-position stapling in a compact and space-saving form.

The imageRUNNER 2545, 2545i, 2535, 2535i, 2530 and 2525 are scheduled to be available for shipping in early April, 2010, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $9,000, $9,950, $7,000, $7,950, $5,200 and $3,500, respectively.

Canon U.S.A. Introduces Three New imagePROGRAF Large Format Printers

(Lake Success, NY) - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging and advanced office solutions, today answers the increasing demand for large format prints in the photographic, proofing and graphic arts market with the introduction of three new imagePROGRAF large format models - the 44-inch imagePROGRAF iPF8300, 24-inch imagePROGRAF iPF6350 and the iPF6300. Designed for precise, ultra high-quality print performance and increased productivity, each model features Canon's new, 12-Color LUCIA EX pigment ink set and advanced printing technologies specifically developed to produce prints with an enhanced color range and improved durability. The new imagePROGRAF models will be unveiled at the Wedding & Portrait Photographer International (WPPI) Convention at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, March 8-11, 2010.

"In just four short years, Canon has introduced more than 20 imagePROGRAF large format printers to the market with each new model raising the bar for outstanding, vibrant image quality and overall versatility," said Jim Rosetta, vice president and general manager, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A. "Coupled with our new LUCIA EX ink set and advanced media capabilities, the new imagePROGRAF models represent an ideal solution for the graphic, fine art, photography and proofing markets."

Enhanced Color Spectrum
With increasing consumer demand for professional and high-quality print jobs, high-end graphic and photographic studios continue to seek the capability to accurately produce vivid output of consumers' most demanding projects. To enhance its available color spectrum, the new imagePROGRAF models feature a revolutionary all-new 12-Color LUCIA EX pigment ink set increasing the achievable color gamut by approximately 20 percent from the previous imagePROGRAF iPFx100 series and enabling over 90 percent coverage of PANTONE ® (*) colors to produce rich expression. Additionally, to better meet the needs of the professional print market, the new models feature a reinforced mechanical structure to enable precise ink placement for improved text and line accuracy, making these new devices a powerful proofing solution.

Exquisite Photographic Output
The introduction of the new LUCIA EX ink provides photographers with the ability to precisely achieve their desired results by producing more expressive and crisp blacks, smooth color gradations, and the capability to reproduce the finest details in the shadow areas of photographs. The new inks are also designed with an innovative polymer structure that results in greater scratch resistance and protection from color fading, while also reducing bronzing and metamerism ensuring durable, stable output.

Wilhelm Imaging Research (WIR), the world's leading independent image permanence testing laboratory, has been evaluating the new Canon LUCIA EX expanded-gamut, 12-color pigment inks. Henry Wilhelm, president of WIR commented, "A review of preliminary data from the still ongoing tests indicates that prints made with LUCIA EX pigment inks and select photo and fine art papers will achieve WIR Display Permanence Ratings in excess of 75 years for color images and well beyond 200 years for black-and-white images. In addition, LUCIA EX pigment inks exhibit excellent short-term color drift ("dry-down") behavior, which is critically important for color-managed workflows and in proofing applications. The new LUCIA EX inks also achieved WIR's highest rating for resistance to damage from atmospheric ozone, a particular concern in urban environments in situations where prints might be displayed unframed and exposed to ambient indoor air."

Simplified Workflows
Recognizing the expanding array of media options for large format printers and to further improve the versatility of these new imagePROGRAF models, Canon has developed a new Media Configuration Tool which allows customers to not only utilize genuine Canon-branded media, but provides the ability to add and make adjustments to paper settings to enhance the precision and quality of output achieved with third-party media. Upon release of the new printer, ICC profiles of popular media types from Intelicoat, Ilford, LexJet and Moab will be available for download on their respective corporate Web sites.

To expand print options and improve proofing capabilities, the iPF8300, iPF6350 and iPF6300 come bundled with a new Print Plug-In for Photoshop®, Digital Photo Professional and support for Adobe Color Management Module, enabling features such as Black Point Compensation. Through the Photoshop Plug-In, each new model allows 16-bit RGB images edited in Photoshop to be sent directly to the imagePROGRAF printers, preserving smooth and high gradation.

Brian Hampton, an award-winning nature photographer printing with a Canon imagePROGRAF for the first time stated, "The quality of the print is amazing. I was particularly impressed by the iPF8300's ability to reproduce shadow details in a way that exceeds anything I've seen previously on the market. It's quite a step above the competition." Hampton also noted the built-in workflow solutions and commented, "The ability to export out of Photoshop via the plug-in is outstanding. Many of its capabilities perform as well as an RIP program without the additional cost."

Maximize Productivity
In order to support high-volume printing and streamline workflows the Canon iPF8300 and iPF6350 come equipped with an 80 GB high-capacity hard disk drive (HDD) that allows for faster spooling of large files as well as the ability to reprint jobs directly from the printer. To ensure the highest level of productivity and reduce overall print time, all new models are also equipped with a standard gigabit Ethernet network interface and an automatic dual-blade cutter.

In those environments that utilize a complete workflow solution in conjunction with CGS, EFI, Ergosoft, GMG, ONYX and other leading RIP manufacturers, updated drivers will be available for download upon the release of the printers from their respective Web sites.

Precision Technology
To fully capitalize on the dynamic color range of the new LUCIA EX ink set, each new imagePROGRAF model employs two advanced one-inch print heads, each featuring 2,560 nozzles per color and outputting a super fine four picoliter (pl) droplet at a full 2400x1200 dots-per-inch resolution (dpi) to reproduce details with extraordinary accuracy and clarity. Paired with enhanced plug-ins and new, High Precision Printing Modes, these new imagePROGRAF models provide an extremely high level of photographic and proofing quality prints.

The new imagePROGRAF iPF8300, iPF6350 and iPF6300 are compliant with U.S. ENERGY STAR energy-saving standards and RoHS compliance standards. The new Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8300, iPF6350 and iPF6300 large format printers will be on display at WPPI booth 401 in Las Vegas, NV from March 8-10, 2010. The imagePROGRAF iPF8300/6350/6300 will start shipping in March for a manufacturers suggested retail price of $5,995, $3,995 and $3,695, respectively.

Canon imageRUNNER 3245i Receives Five-Star Environmental Rating From Buyers Laboratory, Inc.

(Lake Success, NY) - Underscoring its commitment to the environment and helping organizations reduce their overall carbon footprint, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging and advanced office solutions, today announced the imageRUNNER 3245i has received a five-star rating – the highest possible – from Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI) in overall environmental performance.

Based on BLI's extensive real-world testing, the imageRUNNER 3245i uses less energy than the competition in all running and non-running modes. The device consumed less energy – less than half the average – than any other Segment Four monochrome copier tested to date. The imageRUNNER 3245i also has an annual projected energy cost that was just one-third of the average compared to competitor models.

BLI's extensive environmental performance evaluation also takes into consideration energy consumption as well as recovery times. While low energy consumption is a critical measurement tool in today's streamlined business environments, a device cannot be used to its fullest potential if it requires a long recovery time from sleep mode. Through BLI's testing, the Canon imageRUNNER 3245i showed faster than average recovery times from idle and sleep modes after sitting dormant overnight and is competitive in recovery time from sleep mode during daily use.

"Canon has a long-standing commitment to environmental preservation and reducing our overall carbon footprint, and receiving these outstanding ratings from BLI is a testament to our dedication," said Sam Yoshida, vice president and general manger, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A. "We are continuously researching new and advanced technologies that will not only help streamline and improve business environments, but also help companies in their push to become more 'green' and environmentally friendly."

Also of note, the Canon imageRUNNER 3245i received five-star ratings in Runnability using 30 percent, 50 percent and 100 percent Recycled Papers. Throughout the testing, not a single misfeed occurred in the combined 39,000 total impressions and there were no issues with device dusting or paper curling.

In addition to the outstanding BLI environmental ratings, the imageRUNNER 3245i is a ENERGY-STAR qualified and RoHS-compliant device which includes several environmentally conscious features such as toner-save mode when printing, job review to ensure first prints are accurate, and proof mode when copying.

Canon Inc. and its 103 subsidiaries, including North America, Europe, Asia and Australia – totaling more than 700 sites worldwide – are one of the world's largest ISO-14001 Certificate Holders under a consolidated certificate. Canon U.S.A. Honored As One Of The Best Channel Vendors By Business Solutions Magazine

(Lake Success, NY) - For the second consecutive year, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging and advanced office solutions, has been selected by Business Solutions Magazine (BSM) as one of the best channel vendors for the upcoming year. Working with Penn State University, BSM conducted a Web-based survey of their Value-Added-Reseller (VAR) subscribers to rate and rank their vendor partners in the following categories: Service/Support, Channel Friendly, Channel Program, Product Features, Product Reliability, Product Innovation, and Adequate VAR Margins.

"To be honored by BSM as one of the Best Channel Vendors for the second year in a row is a testament to Canon's commitment and dedication of meeting the diversified needs of our channel partners by providing them with the best in office solutions, services and support," said Jim Rosetta, vice president and general manager, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "We are very proud to receive this prestigious accolade and we look forward to continuing our tradition in excellence into 2010."

During the nearly month-long survey, more than 12,000 votes were cast, resulting in one of the largest and most detailed surveys of its kind. Scores were calculated by BSM editorial staff and Penn State University, with overall vendor scores determined by adding the cumulative scores of the seven categories and dividing that score by the number of VAR subscribers who rated them. Vendors were broken down into a variety of technology categories for the survey and those who received too few votes were excluded from consideration. VAR subscribers rated its vendor partners in a scale of 0 (worst) to 5 (best) in seven different categories. This year's results show Canon received higher ratings in every category compared to last year.

Canon works closely with the value-added-reseller channel to provide a wide variety of its imageFORMULA document scanners, network scanners, and check transports, as well as imagePROGRAF large format printers and imageCLASS multifunctional printers.

Canon Toner Cartridge Recycling Program Celebrates 20 Years

(Lake Success, NY) - Canon U.S.A., Inc., today announced that, in 2010, Canon Inc. will mark the 20th anniversary of the Canon Toner Cartridge Recycling Program, a zero-landfill program in which every component of the used all-in-one toner cartridges* that the Company collects is reused, recycled or recovered.

Canon Toner Cartridge Recycling Program: First-of-its-Kind
In 1982, Canon created the world's first personal copying machines incorporating replaceable all-in-one toner cartridges. These toner cartridges were then adapted for use in laser beam printers and rapidly gained in popularity. However, with this increase in popularity came an increase in the number of used cartridges. Canon's corporate philosophy of Kyosei – living and working for the common good – has constantly provided the company with a keen awareness of environmental issues such as a commitment to waste reduction and resource conservation.

In accordance with this commitment, Canon introduced the Toner Cartridge Recycling Program. First launched in 1990, the program has collected approximately 220,000 metric tons of used toner cartridges. The initiative, launched on a global scale by a single business group at no cost to customers, marked a watershed moment within the industry. The cartridge return program now operates in 23 countries worldwide, supported by four global recycling bases: Canon Ecology Industry Inc. in Japan; Canon Dalian Business Machines, Inc. in China; Canon Virginia, Inc. (CVI) in the U.S.; and Canon Bretagne S.A.S. in France.

Toner Cartridge Recycling in the U.S.
As part of Canon's Clean Earth Campaign and the Toner Cartridge Recycling Program, CVI opened Industrial Resource Technologies, Inc. (IRT), a toner cartridge recycling facility in Gloucester, Virginia, in 1996 to begin to reclaim all-in-one cartridges in the U.S. IRT has the distinction of being one of the few automated recycling operations for Canon worldwide and the only cartridge recycling facility within Canon Americas.

Continuing to improve and enhance its recycling capabilities in the region, CVI and IRT completed an expansion of its facilities in 2009, adding 770,000 square feet of space to accommodate both toner cartridge manufacturing and recycling. The expansion strengthens Canon's ability to utilize more recycled materials and reclaimed parts for manufacturing new toner cartridges.

Achieving 100 Percent Recycling and Energy Recovery for Zero Landfill Waste
Canon utilizes closed-loop recycling for its toner cartridges which includes the reuse of parts as well as the recycling of the toner cartridge plastic container shell to create new toner cartridges. As a result, since 2003, all four of Canon's recycling bases, located in Japan, America, Europe and Asia, have achieved a 100 percent recycling and recovery rate (i.e. generated zero landfill waste); by the end of June 2009, the company had reduced the use of new resources by approximately 140,000 metric tons and prevented 370,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. Canon's recycling activities have earned it recognition in the form of a number of prestigious industry awards, beginning with the Grand Prize at Japan's First Global Environmental Awards in 1992.

Why Businesses Should Utilize an Electronic Document Management System

In today’s business world, the amount of paper a business manages can be endless. With each piece of paper, someone needs to file it, space must be used to store it, and on multiple occasions, someone needs to retrieve it. When you are talking about thousands and even millions of pages of paper, this can be a very time-consuming task, and therefore a very costly task. The costs mount up quickly, in the areas of wages for employees who are responsible for filing and retrieving documents, and the areas of storage space required to house the massive amounts of paper files.

It is also an on-going, never-ending task, requiring the time of countless employees. This is time that could be better used performing the tasks that they have their personal expertise in. The opportunity costs for using a paper filing system include wasted time, delayed customer response time, and wasted floor and storage space. In other words, the efficiency of a business is very much hampered by continuing to utilize a paper filing system.

The benefits of an Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) are countless. With an EDMS, you will be able to take all of paper files, put them through a scanner, and them throw them away, or if your too skeptical to toss them, you can store them in some off-site storage where you will hopefully never have to look at them again. All of your files will be stored electronically, accessible almost instantly by any computer within your office at anytime. You do not have to worry about misplaced files or somebody else already having a file at their desk.

The initial cost of converting to an EDMS is usually what keeps people from doing it. This cost consists of the time and money it takes to scan all of a company’s existing files into the system. To save time, a company can pay a scanning service bureau to scan all their files for them, and this will sometimes be the cheapest method as opposed to paying an employee, who is likely less efficient, to scan the files. Whatever the method chosen, the first year cost might be heavy, but these costs should be offset within the first couple of years.

Another route that a lot of companies take is not to scan all of their backfiles into the EDMS, but to start scanning files today as they come in, and leaving all previous files as they were. This allows the company to bypass a large part of the initial costs, while still enjoying the benefits of the electronic file storage. As time goes by and the companies appreciation for the system grows, they will slowly convert their older files into electronic images, allowing them spread this cost over many months or even years.

Once a company is completely paperless and utilizing an EDMS, their efficiency is greatly increased, their response time for customer support is drastically reduced, and their overall office clutter is eliminated. These improvements convert directly to more business and higher profits.

If that’s not enough to convince you, then this will. The company is no longer at risk to having their critical business information stolen, lost, or destroyed due to some unforeseen circumstances, such as Hurricane Katrina that destroyed thousands of business’s paper records. The EDMS can backup your files offsite so nothing will ever be lost, plus its security features will prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing the documents that they shouldn’t, a very difficult task with a paper filing system.
